DEVELOPING YOUTH THROUGH RUGBY
Theme – Premiership Rugby
The NYC Rugby Cup is the annual culminating event for flag rugby teams that have come through Play Rugby USA's "Give Rugby a Try" curriculum-based youth development program. This year's tournament will be taking place from 8am - 4pm on Randall's Island and is expected to include 72 youth rugby teams from Play Rugby USA's NYC program. This event gives us the opportunity to bring all of our programming partners from the Elementary and Middle School levels together in a one day event to celebrate the year. The NYC Rugby Cup features fitness challenges, obstacle courses, cultural exhibitors, and, of course, plenty of rugby!
Every year we adopt an educational theme to our tournament to further the participants’ learning experience. This year we celebrate Premiership Rugby, England’s top professional rugby competition. One of the most widely respected professional leagues in the world, Premiership Rugby is made up of 12 English clubs that compete annually.
• Each school will represent a club that competes in the Premiership Rugby in England.
• Each school will be given a project to learn about the local culture, players, and history of each Premiership club. Taking what they learn, each school will bring a supporter banner to the event celebrating their chosen club. The best banner will win a brand new equipment pack for their team!
• Community Coaches from Premiership clubs will also visit NYC to attend practices with some of the adopted teams.
A new addition to this years event is the integration of a program-wide day of service. Play Rugby USA will be partnering with Up2Us and other veterans oriented charities to support our troops overseas. Each team will be able to visit a booth where they can write letters to troops serving overseas.
